Rannoch Clearway Proposal Update

Following a well-attended Rannoch Community Council meeting on 18 May (40+ residents), clear concerns were raised about PKC’s proposal to implement a Clearway for 5km between Killichonan and Rannoch Lodge. 

The Council have stated the reason for the Rural Clearway restriction is due to parked vehicles causing an obstruction which could cause access problems for residents and emergency service vehicles.

Key concerns at the RCC meeting included:

• No evidence was available of road blockage issues
• There is a clear risk of moving parking problems elsewhere
• Residents were concerned about private and service accessibility to their own properties
• The current effectiveness of Rural Clearways in the Rannoch area
• That there is a need to look at the whole situation around the loch as one cohesive plan to address all issues such as unsuitable vehicle-based camping, lack of parking, and limited passing places.

Many felt that the proposal is too blunt on its own and could negatively affect residents, visitors, and local activities.

What happens next?

RCC has asked PKC that the proposal be paused and replaced with a full visitor management review ahead of 2027, working with PKC and wider partners. They have stated that this is a shared challenge and the community is keen to be consulted to develop the most appropriate solution.

In addition, many residents have also submitted letters of concern to PKC which means that the proposal will not progress further until it has been discussed at the next Environment and Infrastructure Committee due to take place in August.
